When choosing the right person to capture these intimate moments, it’s important to make sure she has a very good understanding of birth. Having a doula, who is also a birth photographer is ideal. Sometimes a doula is asked to take photographs (certainly no guarantees with me!), and sometimes it is not possible, due to various circumstances, often where the woman needs you to provide support. They are a wonderful memory for parents but more importantly it provides a wonderful picture story when talking to your baby/child about his birth. Newborn’s and children love to hear the story of their birth and this is a wonderful, positive imprint for him to carry throughout his life. I suggest getting a doula and a birth photographer. You will not get these moments back – and the memory does fade! Working with a photographer who understands birth and their role, a woman should not even be aware of their presence.
